It seemed like 75% of the field went to the same general area to the NE of the narrows. We joined the scrum on the Eastern edge of the line of boats. Nothing on starting spot, so we headed up the lake to an area where we found a school during pre-fish. Chuck got a keeper in the boat. I think I got a pike, then lost a keeper and one that looked like it wouldn't go 12-inches. I got a walleye down the way a little bit. Ran some docks, but nothing. It was an extremely slow morning for us. We \went back to the starting spot and got an 11-incher. Ran back up the lake to a calm weedline. Finally got a keeper in the boat on the big Bubble Walker. Ran down to Bill Bongs Challenge Cup Starting Spot and got another keeper that took the LiveTarget Wake Gill. Chuck put several fish in the boat in short order, then culled with a couple of good 3lber in the cane. Game Over for Mr. Bass 2022. I got my 3lber out along the weed line out from the cane. We ended up back where I got my first keeper. I got my 4th keeper right before we were going to move on a spinnerbait. We went back to the starting area. I caught a short and a small keeper on the spinner bait. Went back up to Bongs Starting Spot. Got bit off twice with jigs and caught several pike on the spinnerbait. Had the craw tube get a bit off. Chuck caught a couple that didn't help and culled once or twice with minor upgrades, and then the day was over.

Results: My fish weighed 10/09, which put me in 14th Place (2nd to Last Place). Beau Bacon won it with 16/14 and got Lunker with a 3/15. 2nd went to Snatcher Czech (14/11), who showed his face for the first time this season. And 3rd Place went, and Co-Angler Cash went to Snatcher Sarah.

My Thoughts: At long last, I finally got paired with Chuck Fields, and it was cool to do it when he clinched his second Baxter Bass Snatcher Mr. Bass title. He accomplished the feat back in 1994. This was the first complete season he has fished with the club since winning it in '94. As for the fishing, I figured there was no way, under those conditions, I wouldn't be able to get a limit of keepers in the boat. Besides a half-hour window when Chuck caught most of his weight, it was really slow for us. Unfortunately, I didn't get any bites fishing on the bottom during that window, and when we returned to the spot, the pike had moved in. Whatcha gonna do? It just wasn't my year.

Basspastorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09111355231233505292noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10059688.post-62889030220834648292021-09-25T23:29:00.017-07:002021-10-06T23:38:18.537-07:00B.B.S. I elected to start in Sullivan at the Intersection. I had Darren set us down a little short of the juice. A decision I almost regretted as Snatcher Ludenia and Nate set down in the general area but fortunately didn't get a bite to slow them down. Darren had something big boil on his frog on about his fifth cast. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to get it to strike again. I got us up to the juice and had a fish suck under my frog in a spot where my vision was a bit obscured by reeds. I ended up getting a less than optimal hookset, and the fish quickly got off. A couple minutes later, I had a fish suck my frog under, but this time I was ready and got the day off to a good start with a fish close to 3lbs. I began to work to the East when a boat not in the tournament fished through where I was heading. They caught one small fish, and that was it. I ended up fishing the Intersection instead. It just wasn't happening, and the wind was staying still, so we fished the GOMH on the Sullivan side and then headed into Platte for the rest of the day.

We spent the next few hours on the North end of Platte in Inlet Bay. I started by fishing the rice line from East to West. I got a small keeper on a Terminator Frog. I think Darren got his first keeper shortly after that. It just wasn't happening on top, so I started throwing a Magnum Super Fluke. We were at the Cookie Jar, and I was just about to pull us off of the rice line when the 4lber bit the Fluke. That kept us on the rice line longer, but we didn't get any more bites. The wind came up a bit, so I pulled us out onto the flat. I got a small keeper and a bunch of pike on the Jackhammer and a craw tube as I worked our way back to where we started. It got calm again. I got my feet set and threw the Terminator Frog way back in the rice line, and 5lber slammed a couple seconds after it landed. I could have sworn I locked the weight at 4.93lbs, but apparently not. I wasn't surprised that my scale weighed it light. We worked the rice corner, then turned around, went deeper into the junk, and I worked our way South. Unfortunately, there was nothing in the slop in Center Inlet. As we made our way into South Inlet, I cast to the coontail mat, and a 3lber took the Terminator Frog about 10 feet out from the mat. A couple minutes later, Darren had a good fish boil on his frog, but unfortunately, his line snapped on the hookset. Darren did get a keeper there in South Inlet. We ended up working our way back to the north with Darren missing several opportunities and me getting pike on a buzzbait. The sun came out, and we got back on the rice line. I got a quality cull, and Darren got his last fish of the day.

As we were coming to the end of the rice, I noticed the front flasher was flickering on and off. Turns out his starting battery was out of juice. I headed us in the direction of the public access, and Smitty came by to see what was up. Smitty has a lithium jumper pack, which got us back in the game for the final hour and a half. We made a couple of more stops with me getting a few pike, no bass. Just couldn't get one more Platte Lake Special to put my weight for the day over 20lbs.

Results: I won my first Snatcher Tournament with a weight of 19/12, and I also got wood and $ for the 5/2 Lunker. Smitty came in 2nd with 17/9, and Nate got 3rd with 16/13.

The win also allowed me to reach my goal of finishing in the club's Top 10 for the year in 10th Place.

My Thoughts: I am so grateful to have drawn Snatcher Darren as a boater and that I fished clean for the most part. I thought I had screwed my chances catching a twenty-pound bag on Wednesday when I didn't know we would be fishing my home lake; Thankfully there were still some melon heads up North. Winning on a lake that has disappointed me so many times made my first win so much sweeter. I had a pike steal my Dinger about 20-minutes into the day. We then went around Partridge Point. From there, we went to the North end of Bear Island in the reeds. I thought we might get a bite there with the wind blowing on it, but we didn't. We then went to the East end of Center Rice. We started by drifting along the edge. Thought for sure I would get a bite there as it looked great, but nope. Then we went on the lee side, and I frogged it, trying to make a perfect cast to get a reaction bite. When we met Snatcher Ludenia and Al, they confirmed that it was a tough bite. We then made the run back west to Uram Bay and finished the day there. Bruce missed a bite, and I got the muskie in the final 15-minutes. So we both ended the day skunked for bass.

Results: Goose egg buys a goose egg as good as DNF or DQ'ed. Snatcher Nate came in first with 21-8. Snatcher Chuck got 2nd with 17-8, and Smitty came in 3rd with 15-1. Snatcher Chuck and Bacon tied with a 4-9 Lunkers. Only 4 limits were caught, and we had 6 guys skunk. So half the Co-Anglers blanked and one boater (My boater).

My Thoughts: The bite was off, and wind conditions were not favorable. We fished too fast most of the time. I'm not going to beat myself up over this one. Dennis only put two keepers in the boat, and Hammer, who was fishing with Chuck, only caught 3 keepers. Nate's non-boater got skunked as well. I am just glad it warmed up, and I was able to listen to tunes while we were making our long runs through the waves.

Basspastorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09111355231233505292noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10059688.post-74293587435555758792021-08-14T07:59:00.004-07:002021-08-21T08:01:05.507-07:00B.B.S. We worked our way South along the reed line with Beau pitching a jig and me throwing a frog. I think I got the first bite of the morning in some pads and reeds up by the shore. It was a small fish that got off after I had reeled it in about 10 feet. I am pretty sure it was a bass, but I'm not 100% certain. The reeds came to an end, and we worked the cattails and docks for a little bit with Beau catching two pike. It wasn't happing, so we ran to some other reeds. I got the first keeper in the boat with the frog. Beau then caught a 2lber on a jig. Shortly after that, I got my final keeper of the day on the frog. As we worked the reeds. I would get hung up occasionally. I would put about 15lbs of pressure on my 50lb braid, and my line kept breaking, frustrating. After about the 5th time that happened, I switched to a different rod. Beau got his second keeper and missed some bites. Beau spotted what he swore was a muskie. I saw the fish but only saw its back. I had a fish swirl on the frog but not get it. Neither Beau nor I could get it to bite again. Beau switched to a Senko and got a couple of good fish. I switched to a Yum Dinger and missed one bite. The wind came up, and we headed to a weedline spot. I missed a couple of bites on the Havoc Pit Boss. Beau filled out his limit on the Senko. I switched to a Yum Dinger and got a couple dinks and a pike on that, and the day ended with me only getting two keepers. I thought maybe I was headed for a last-place finish, but it turns out lots of people struggled on this hot, windy day.

Results: My two fish weighed 4/05, which put me in 15th Place out of 21 anglers. Mick Ziebell won the tournament with 19/03 and got Lunker with a 3/15 fish. Dave Smith got 2nd Place and won the Co-Angler Cash out of Dennis Lothspeich's boat. Great Job, Dave! Nate Steinbauer got 3rd. Beau came in 4th.

My Thoughts: What a frustrating day. I let the frustration get to me with Beau catching fish and me not getting bites. I think I just fished too fast and didn't concentrate on what I was doing enough. Once we left the reeds, I just couldn't get settled in mentally and didn't fish well at all. Dennis was sitting there when we arrived. A good sign. About 10 minutes in, Dwight had his first smallie in the boat. He was sight fishing. I started throwing topwater because there was some activity on the surface, but I didn't get a hit. Dwight put 3 or 4 smallmouths in the boat pretty quickly, and Dennis had his limit in the first half hour. I got a hit from something small on the

Crackle Jerk Shad that came off about halfway back to the boat. I put on a Bluegill KVD Jerkbait and got a couple pike and a perch on that. After about an hour, Dennis left. Dwight got his fourth and fifth fish off of some deeper beds, both quality fish. I eventually tried throwing a Ned rig to bedders but didn't have any takers. The wind put a ripple on the water, so we got out of there around 9AM. We went to a nearby point where we could see largemouth swimming around, but I couldn't get any to bite other than one small fish that I threw back that I didn't bother to measure even though it was close to 12-inches.

By 9:30, we headed to Berth to fish docks. We spent an hour and a half in there with only one fish for Dwight to show for it. We headed to the Pike River Inlet area, and I finally got on the board with a quality frog fish, but that was the only bite we got there. So next, we headed up to Arrowhead to see if maybe the slop was going there. Dwight got a frog fish in the first 10 minutes, then nothing. I switched to a swimbait and got a 13-incher on that, but that was the only bite. I tried a swim jig and missed a bite that felt pikey on that. With two hours left, we headed back to the starting spot in the hopes that Dwight could upgrade with a smallie and contend for the win. However, Dennis was sitting there again. We went to a nearby secondary area. I ended up picking a solid 2.5lb largie off of a dock just letting the Dinger sit on the bottom. With that clue, we headed to some nearby isolated docks in search of my limit. I lost a really good fish right away but quickly rebounded with a two-pounder and two more keepers. I ended up culling twice, including one off the last dock we fished in a Hay Lake.

Results: My fish weighed 14/2 which put me in 13th Place. Dwight had 19/1, which was only good enough for 8th😲. Keith Tuma blew the field away and the previous Club Record Bag taking 1st Place with 27/4 and Lunker with a 5/3 smallmouth. Dennis got 2nd with 21/10. I guess the key for Keith recognized that the big smallies were still pre-spawn; thus, he was looking for cruisers, not bedders. His Co-Angler Dave Smith also had a 20lb bag.

My Thoughts: I came in expecting the fishing to be pretty good, and it was, for the most part. I did, after all, catch one of my biggest bags as a Snatcher and my biggest of the 6 tournaments I've fished there. It just took me forever to get on the same page as the fish, which was frustrating. Thankfully the heat really didn't bother me, and I was comfortable all day.

Congrats to Tuma; that was impressive.
Basspastorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09111355231233505292noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10059688.post-67225762243627567732020-10-11T02:17:00.009-07:002020-10-14T02:19:37.014-07:002020 Challenge Cup Borden Lake

It was a windy cloudy cool day on Borden Lake for the 2020 Challenge Cup. The Snatchers were a lost cause without Chuck Steinbauer to lead the team. We came in Last. Tim Benson did leave with 2nd Place Money though. All of the Snatcher Co's only caught 2 keepers apiece. My fish being the lightest of the bunch. The fishing was more difficult than it should have been. I expected the fish to really be snapping, but they weren't. Which led me to become discouraged, disinterested, and bored. After a long dry stretch, my boater finally started getting some fish and I perked up for the final couple of hours. I caught my second keeper with about 5 minutes left to go. My boater Jason Schmitt ended up being just shy of the money. He got his fish on the chatter and swim jig with a swimbait trailer. His boat was sweet.

Basspastorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09111355231233505292noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10059688.post-57532874401008822792020-10-04T03:27:00.001-07:002020-10-07T03:29:29.804-07:00B.B.S. We started out with a slow-motion start in heavy fog that was lifting by the time we arrived at our starting spot in Sunrise Bay. The fish were inactive. So we started covering water. I got a couple pike. I think Nate connected with his first fish around 10:30AM in some pads on a swim jig with a Kalin's Mogambo Grub, He missed a bite and then caught one off a dock. We then tried the North end of Sunrise and he missed a couple there. We briefly tried the Slop Hole. That wasn't happening so we quickly left. Just outside of the Slop Hole Nate got a nice keeper and had a couple other good ones boil on his jig. He gave me a Mombo and I got my keeper that was 12.25". We then left Sunrise and worked in the mid-section of the Lake. We were fishing pads with reeds and about to leave when Nate caught a good fish. That bite clued us into a pattern, but we couldn't land out bites and I got a pike. I did lose a small keeper that hung me up on the pads. We went back to the place in Sunrise where Nate had the boils. I had a feeling one of us was going to get smoked and it was me first. I got too excited and jerked the jig out of the fishes mouth. Nate caught his limit shortly after that. We went back to our starting spot and didn't get anything. Then we went and worked the area across from where I missed the blow-up. I missed a blow-up in the reeds there as well. We went back to where Nate got his first fish and I got a pike. We spent the last 15-minutes by the access. Nate got his biggest fish of the day there and I got another pike. Theo won the final Co-Angler Challenge of the Year out of Tim's boat.

My Thoughts: It was a tough bite and even if I had caught that other bass I had on I don't think it would have moved me up any. Who knows if my other bites were even bass or not. I finished in the Club Super 6, so I do get Wood for this year. I set new personal bests for Total Points, One Out Points, and Average place of finish. I wasn't because I fished that great, I didn't. We just didn't have our full complement of guys this year.

Basspastorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09111355231233505292noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10059688.post-14261163577196955292020-10-03T00:16:00.002-07:002020-10-04T00:17:28.340-07:00B.B.S. I was the last guy to arrive. I got my stuff in the boat and Tim had four extra cull tags. We blasted off a little before 7:30AM and we headed right to the reeds on the West side of Round Lake. It wasn't long and I flipped up my big bass of the day 2/15 on a Texas Rigged junebug craw tube. Tim got 2 or 3 keepers on our first pass along the outside edge in maybe a 60-yard stretch. We then worked our way back inside the reeds but not too far from the edge. I missed a bite on a Hack Attack Jig and caught a pike around the same area where I got my bass. As we started back on a second pass Tim got a nice one. I think he was culling by the time I got another bass. I did lose a fish that broke me off. Tim threw a chatter jig to a small reed island and had a good one jump all over it. I cast my craw tube to the area and was immediately hit by my second biggest bass of the day. We thought maybe we found a school, but nope. So after checking the area out resumed fishing down the reed line. Not too far down Tim got another good one on the chatterjig. I caught a 12.5" just outside of the reed line on a Hack Attack Jig. Then I got on the reed line on a tilapia craw tube. The sun had come out prompting me to go to a lighter color. I got my fifth fish on a D & M Baits junebug Piranha 2 Swim Jig (chatter). I got my limit fish around noon on the craw tube. We then worked our way back with me missing or losing several bites.

We then tried a small reed bed and Tim got a couple of upgrades. At that point, we decided to leave Round. We went to reed bed on the North end of Gull. I got one upgrade on a junebug craw tube and caught a dink on a LiveTarget Baitball Popper. It wasn't happening. We spent the final hour and a half on the South end not catching anything.

The Results: My fish weighed 12/13oz putting me in 7th Place. Tim had 18/9 putting him in 4th. Keith Tuma won with 20/6 and got Lunker with a 4/7 fish Second went to Smitty with 19even and Al Steinbauer got third edging Benson by 6ozs. The Co-Angler Challenge was won by Beau again.

My Thoughts: I am satisfied with my day. It took me a couple hours to relax and get comfortable and in tune with pitching the reeds. We were the only boat in Round and because of that fact we probably should have stayed there the whole day.

This Tournament guaranteed I will finish 5th or 6th in AOY.
Basspastorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09111355231233505292noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10059688.post-49310684364267492232020-09-12T02:58:00.000-07:002020-09-16T02:59:19.829-07:00B.B.S. Conditions: 50-58℉, Cloudy to Mostly Cloudy with occasional drizzle, 0-4mph SE
The area received a pretty good rain overnight.

The Day: We started in the reeds just to the East of the YMCA Camp in Little Boy. I may or may not have missed a couple of bites. After about an hour and a half with nothing to show for it we left the those reeds and headed to some reeds on the NE side of the lake. Bill missed a bite along a tree in the water. I had something very pike like attack my Fluke and get off quicky in the reeds. I had a couple other boils, but nothing hooked up. We then went to the dock by the outlet where Al had already taken a fish. We then headed to Wabedo. We started fishing to the east right at the entrance to Wabedo. Bill was working the shoreline reeds and I was throwing out with my orange Shower Blows knock-off. I had a 35 or so inch muskie jump over the lure and miss thankfully. From there we went and worked a weedline. Finally, I got the skunk out of the boat with 2.5lb bass on a junebug Piranha. Bill then caught a line burner on a Senko. Then he got a fish that almost went 2lbs. I got a pike on a craw tube. It was calm and overcast. Perfect topwater conditions. I started throwing a River2Sea Bubble Walker. Something boiled behind the lure. I let it sit for a few seconds then popped it. Whoosh, the 6.5 pound pike took it. After putting up a good fight Bill netted it for me. Thankfully, It didn't put up any fuss in the boat and the hook came out easily. We fished Wabedo for maybe 15 more minutes then headed back to Little Boy with maybe 2 hours left in the day. We went back to the YMCA camp area starting to the West of where we did in the morning. There is a breakwater at the camp. I made a cast to it with a bone Shower Blows and good bass blasted it. It jumped got down in the weeds and came off. I was not happy. We worked the reeds again. I had something pike like take a shot at my Spro Sprinker knock off and not hook up. Bill was pretty frustrated as was I. I suggested we move in closer to shore into an area that was good for me and Al in the last tournament. We started working the pads and rice, nothing. Then we came to boat lane. I probably should have directed Bill on how to best approch the high percentage area. Sure enough there were a couple of fish there. I got a decent hookset, but the fish quickly got off. It was 2 to 3lber. Bill put on frog as I peppered the area. I think he got a bite on his third cast by a smaller fish that didn't hook up. We came to the next boat lane and sure enough their were two fish in the high percentage area. We both landed our bites this time. That happened right in front of Hammer and Checkbook who were working towards us. We quickly ran out of slop. With 20 minutes left we went to another slop area where Bill lost a fish and I caught a pike. I was quite disappointed to only bring in two fish and thought I would be a bottom dweller for sure. But a lot of guys struggled, so I reached my goal of a Top 8 finish.

Results: My fish weighed 5lbs 6ozs, which put me in 8th Place. The tournament was won by Tim Benson with 18/9 and he had lunker with a 4/8. Beau Bacon won the Co-angler Challenge out of Tim's boat with 14/03, which put him in 3rd Place. Al Steinbauer was 2nd with 15/8.

My Thoughts: I don't know what the fishes deal was. I would have thought everbody would have come in with limits under those conditions, but the fish were just not up and feeding like you wold expect in the Fall. 2/3rds of the field caught 3 or fewer fish. Ouch

We figured out something that would work to late. Oh well I am now in a three way tie for 4th in the Angler of the Year. It looks like I stand a decent chance of making the Clubs year end Super 6 provided I don't skunk at either of the final two tournaments, which are back to back the first weekend of October on Gull and Cedar Lake.

Conditions:
Started late due to fog turning sunny around 11:30 or so. Light WSW Wind.

The Day:
Started with a fog delay, so we bumped the weigh-in time to 4:30PM. I think we had our 5mph blast off at 8:20 or so. Herman and I were headed to the East end so it was a good long time before we started fishing. We stopped at some reeds along the South shoreline with some rice and pads closer into shore. I got a pike on a frog along some reeds and then the first bass of the day (1.94lbs) along some rice. Herman got a 2lber out from some rice on a spinnerbait. That made his day. We hit some Reed/Rice/Pads in the middle of the Eastern Bay next. I got a 1.27lber out of some pads. Had a couple of probable pike swipe at me and not come back for seconds. I launched one pike that bit 12 feet through the air when I set the hook on it. I then had the 2.40lber ambush the Sparrow about 8 feet out in open water after coming off of some pads. We worked around the backside of the stuff we were fishing. I cast to some pads landing on the edge when a 3 to 4lb fish body slammed the Sparrow. I quickly dropped the rod and set the hook sending the Sparrow back towards me at Mach 1. The dang fish didn't eat the frog. I threw the kitchen sick at her trying to get it to bite again, but she gone! That was my last bite in this stuff. As we worked our way over to the access area I switched the Sparrow from my 7' 4" Xtra Heavy Frog Rod to my 7'4" Heavy Tatula Frog Rod. It was clear that I was going to be throwing a frog for the next few hours, so I wanted to do it with my favorite rod. Over by the access I had a 14/15 bass get off at the boat. I figured that fish would have been culled so I didn't stress it. The sun came out. We were working some open water between slop pockets when I caught a dink. When we got to the next slop line I lost another 14/15 fish, no biggie. We went through a little dead zone of rice. We were approaching a rice/pad point where Bruce lost a bite during pre-fish. I think Herman missed two separate fish there. I think Herman missed another fish in some pads/reeds. The area turned to pads. Herman gave me control of the boat as he made sandwiches. I had a pike miss me. I then had the 2.66lber give his location away. I caught her on the next cast. I doubled back to re-fish the area and got the 2.73lber. The sandwiches were now ready so we sat there and ate. I finished first so I went back over the area again and got the 2.22lber. We doubled back one more time and didn't get anything so we proceeded along the pad edge. I got me big fish of the day which weighed 2/13. Shortly after that, I had a fish smoke the frog and bury me in the pads. Thinking it was another good one I put way to much pressure on the rod and it snapped. The fish was still hooked and I reeled in a 13-inch dink. I quickly put the Sparrow back on the Xtra Heavy and tried to get the fact that I busted my favorite rod in the world with little hope of being able to procure another one out of my mind. I caught a couple fish that didn't help and Herman lost a couple of quality blow-ups. Herman was not happy about missing the fish and that his trolling motor was continuously needing to be freed of weeds. And I wasn't happy I had busted my rod. Smitty came over to talk letting us know his smallest fish was 3lber. After he left I should have suggested we re-fish over the pads again. I don't know if Herman would have gone for it or not seeing the trouble the weeds were giving him, but the thought didn't even enter my mind. I did want to go back to the area where I got my first quality bite. That is where I got my final cull of the day, a two and a quarter. At about 2:30PM we left for the West side of the lake. We went to some reeds where he got some bites in pre-fish. Nothing going on. We then tried some docks. Herman got a dink. We then went to some reeds/pads along the Southside of the lake. Herman got his third fish and I got a couple of dinks.

The Results: My fish weighed 15/15, which put me in 4th Place. The tournament was won by Smitty's 21/05 bag. Beau won the Co-Angler Challenge again with 16/13 which put in 2nd Place. Getting "wood" for the first time was Jonathan Notsch in 3rd Place with a 16/7 bag and Bruce Groulx with the 4/1 Lunker.

My Thoughts: This tournament is going to sting for a while. Breaking my favorite rod because I was so amped up burst my bubble. Devastating! I love that rod. I can't believe I only had that one 3 to 4lb bite and the doggone fish didn't get the frog. It's like losing the smallmouth that would have filled my limit on the Mississipi. I am snakebit as far as getting wood. We really should have gone back over that padded area a second time.

On the positive side, fourth place is solid points. I am now definitely in the hunt for the Super 6 as I currently sit in 5th Place and the next tournament is on Little Boy/Wabedo. A lake I feel good about.

Boater: Chuck Steinbauer
Conditions: 65-84℉, Mostly Sunny, 0-3mph Various directions

The Day: We blasted off for this one at around 6:40AM which is nice. It became quickly apparent to me with Chuck getting bites almost immediately on a stick worm and nothing going on topwater that finesse fishing would have to be a bigger part of the program than I wanted it to be. I switched to a Z-Man TRD on an Outkast Perfect Ned Head and caught me a 9" dink and a rock bass. I didn't get a hit on anything on the next two spots we tried. I finally got my first keeper in the boat on the Ned Rig at Darrin's Point. The fish was 14.5" long and in my haste to get back fishing I didn't weigh it till later. It ended up being the smallest fish in my bag at 1/7. I then caught a line burner followed by my big fish of the day at 2/8. We then went to the spot Chuck got a nice smallie and a couple of good lmb's on in pre-fish. I caught a 2lber and Chuck got bupkiss. We then went to the public access where I got a couple of small topwater fish that would take forever and a day for me to cull out. I did manage to get rid of the line burner and the one I replaced him with on our next stop before we hit a long dry spell. We came back to that weedline spot later in the day and I got an upgrade that stuck along with some dinks and a multitude of rockies. In the final hour, we hit one of Chuck's old spots, and both upgraded a couple more fish. We spent the final 20-minutes down by the landing where there was a chop on the water. I had two fish hit at the Whopper Plopper and not hook up.

Results: My fish weighed 11lbs 15ozs which put me in 6th Place. Chuck's weighed 14/10 and put him in 2nd Place. Hammer took 1st with 16/5 and lunker with a 4/02 smallie. Tyler Czech was the first Co-Angler Challenge Winner of 2020 with 13/05.

The 6th Place finish is my 3rd best finish in the 1st tournament of the year. It looks like we are going to have small fields this year and there is a possibility we won't make up the first tournament which was postponed. Every point counts and this finish gives me a leg up in finishing in the Club Super 6 at the end of the year.

My Thoughts: Pre-fishing is a big deal for my confidence level. Last year the late June tournament was held on Alexander under similar circumstances, but I was unable to pre-fish that one. The report coming in last year was that the bite was on fire. When it wasn't on tournament day I got caught flat-footed and never got comfortable with what I was throwing. I only brought in 3 fish that day. This year I was prepared for what I was going to throw if the fish didn't cooperate and the plan worked out pretty well.

I should probably pick up some more of those Outkast Perfect Ned Heads. I only have 3 of them.

Conditions: 37-57℉, Sunny turning mostly Cloudy around 2PM, 0-4mph NE

The Day:
I forgot to bring my sunglasses. Fortunately, my boater had an extra pair in his glove box. Also, it was nice to draw a partner with dual consoles so I didn't freeze on the ride to Boy Bay. We started in the reeds on the North end of Bear Island. I got the first bite of the day on a junebug Craw Tube, but it got off. I thought it was a bass, but my line was frayed so maybe it was a pike. I got two other bites in the reeds. The first one dropped it immediately and the second had me into a reed before I could even set the hook. Wasn't able to get either fish to hit again. After an hour of that, we headed for some rice.

We started shallow working our way along the rice line to deeper rice. Ruff had a couple fish strike at his frog, but not hook up. The second fish was 2/3lb bass that jumped completely out of the water but didn't get the frog. Once we got to the deeper rice Paul but the first small keeper in the boat on a craw tube. I think slightly before that Dennis showed up and started fishing about 50 yards up or so in the direction we were heading. I took that as a positive sign. Paul got the second fish of the day as well. He only got one more non-keeper for the rest of the day. He had about the same number of bites as me. Over the next couple of hours, I managed to get 4 keepers in the boat on the junebug Craw Tube. I missed a couple of bites on a frog and a few on the Craw Tube. By noon my upper back was sore.

At About 1:30PM we left the rice for the northern Shoreline of Boy where we fished a couple of docks, some rushes which transitioned into rice. We didn't get anything. So we went in search of reed beds on that northern shore. Ruff got his short there. With an hour of fishing time left, we headed back to the rice and Dennis was there again. We put into the rice about 50 yards away. Paul missed a fish and then I got a keeper on a Green Pumpkin/Brown craw tube. Shortly after that Dennis motored in much closer to us and informed us we came right in on the juice. He also reported his non-boater Snatcher rookie Jon Notsch was kicking his ass. I asked Dennis what size weight they were using. He was using 1oz and said Jon used a 1/2oz, but Jon said he was now using a 1oz as well. I ended up getting bit off so I switched back to the junebug Craw Tube and upgraded to a 1/2oz weight: I had been using 5/16th. We motored back on the other side of Dennis and I quickly got my limit fish in the boat. I got a fish that wouldn't help and got bit off two more times. With 20-minutes left I got two culls on an Evergreen Frog including my big fish of the day.

The Results: My bass weighed 11/04 which put me in 10th Place out of 20 anglers. 1st Place and Lunker were caught by Keith Tuma (20/02) (4/01). The Co-Angler Challenge was won by Beau Bacon for 4th time this year with a 3rd Place finish out of Tim Benson's boat. Three anglers blanked and only 8 limits were caught. Tough bite.

I ended up in 9th Place for the year

My Thoughts: I didn't fish particularly efficiently because I struggled with casting accuracy all day long thanks to a poor night's rest coming in and the really long day I spent on the water on Thursday. Other than that I thought I fished pretty well. We spent at least half the day where there were no fish. Once again a kicker fish eluded me.
The Day:
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px;">We started at the rice island at the confluence of the two rivers where Bruce got the two bites prefishing. There was notably no activity going on here while there was plenty of it when we pre-fished. We didn't get a bite. There was some activity to the South of us just off of the rice. When we got down there I had a fish hit my Piranha Chatterjig, but not hook up. It jolted the rod like a pike. That was the only bite we got along the rice. We then headed across to the slop matt which wasn't nearly as well-formed as when we pre-fished; It shrunk significantly. I saw a fish come out of the water. I had bruce get me in casting range and I got a hit on the Spro Sprinker Frog but it didn't hook up. It was a small fish. Couldn't get a follow-up hit on a swim jig, Piranha, or craw tube. We worked our way to the South end of the mat. There was activity there and I was just about to say expect to get a bite when Bruce had a hit on his swim jig. It got off. Bruce is pretty sure it was a bass. A couple of minutes later I had the grub tail get bit off the Piranha. I replaced it with a Zoom Speed Craw. We worked back over the point and I directed Bruce to take us into a cut slop. I got my first bass there. I was so relieved not to be skunked. We worked up the East side of the slop mat without any luck.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px;">Next, we went to re-work our starting spot coming up from the NW along the shoreline. I got my second bass along the shoreline on the Piranha. Didn't get anything on the second pass. I think we then went a little way up the Crow Wing to where Bruce got a bass the first day he pre-fished. Bruce got a pike and I got a pike in the rice slop on a 1oz Jig/Craw. I was so ticked it wasn't a bass.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px;">We then tried a spot in the confluence we hadn't pre-fished and didn't get a bit. We then ran up the Gull River to a narrow section. I got my third bass there at the entrance to the narrow section on a white double willow white Strike King Spinnerbait. We fished a few more spots without any luck in the Gull River. We went back to the starting spot. Nothing doing.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px;">We then ran up the river. Bruce thought he missed a bite. I got an 11-inch short largemouth. I thought I missed a bass, immediately threw back to the spot and got a pike that stole my spinnerbait when it came off the Power Clip. Was not to happy about that. We ended the day where I got my second fish.
He s an outstanding guy, but he is a novice when it comes to bass fishing. I think Bruce probably would have preferred if I would have taken charge and run the boat. If I ever get partnered with him again I'll see if he wants me to do that. The thing is I enjoy the challenge of fishing from the back end of the boat without having to worry about controlling the boat. I did do some boat control coaching, which I think Bruce found helpful. If I would have taken control of the boat I would have thrown a frog a lot more than I did. A frog was a key bait for Tuma and Ruff.
Conditions: 83-65℉, Partly Cloudy, 3-12mph WNW

The Day:
We blasted off 4th right behind Chuck Fields and wouldn't you know it he went right to our starting spot as well which was off of the big point on the North of the pit side of the lake. Darren set us down to the West of Fields and we started working towards him. I had a 1.91lb bass jump on my 3/8 black/blue jig pretty much immediately. I got it in the box and it was a repeat performance with a slightly smaller fish. The fished seemed to shut down on the jig after that. I threw out a Neko rigged Yum Dinger and got a 1.30lber on that immediately. I think Darren got his first fish shortly after that and I got a short. We worked back over where I got the fish to start and didn't get anything, Fields worked to the East so we went to where he started and I got 1.70lb fish that hit my jig on the fall. After maybe an hour and a half we went to our second spot which was in the NE section of the pit lake. I made the mistake of checking our fish while we were running and I shut the livewell on one of my rod tips breaking it, doh! I got a 1.19 and my 2/8 lunker to fill out my limit on the jig. I then culled up with 1.71lb fish on the jig. Darrin was getting a little better quality of fish on a blue/black craw tube, so I started throwing that and I got a 1.63lb fish on that; I thought the fish was a weed at first. We were just about to leave to go fish the pads when I got a 2.05lb fish on the jig next to a dock.

The pads didn't even yield a blow-up for me, but Darren got a couple of fish there and missed some solid blow-ups. Next, we went out and worked the roadbed. I think I got a 2.13lb out there along with a couple that didn't help. We went back to our second spot and I got my last fish of the day there on the craw tube (2.20).

Results: My fish weighed 13/02 with 2/8 big fish which beat Hammers 2/06 big thus putting me in 12th Place. Darren's fish weighed 14lbs with 3/04 big which put him in 10th Place. The tournament was won by Jim "Smitty" Smith 17/03. Lunker weighed 3/14 and was caught by Mick Ziebell.

My thoughts: I don't think I lost any fish that hurt me. I just didn't have a shot at a kicker that would have put me in the top half of the field.
Thoughts Coming In: We had a very good pre-fish. I was a little concerned because it was a deep jig bite. While I can catch fish that way I know it is an area of weakness as I miss a lot of bites. My boater Bill Lundenia is a jig master. I figured I would see if they would hit a craw tube, which I'm much more comfortable with and switch if Bill was catching them on a jig.

Conditions: 83-66℉, Some clouds in the morning turning sunny, 0-4mph WSW
WT: High 70s

The Day: We went South to start where the fish were bigger on average in pre-fish. I started by throwing a River2Sea Bubble Walker over the calm lake. A pike jumped about 5-feet in the air and was my first fish in the boat. After about 10-minutes it was clear that any area fish didn't want it on top, so I switched to the craw tube and pretty quickly got a 2lber. I got one other 2lber, but it was not happening so we went to the "Smallmouth Hole". I picked up a quick keeper as did Bill. Then Bill had a 3lber throw his jig. I got a couple more 2-pounders on the craw tube. We then went to a hump and I got 2.66lber on the craw tube. The sun came out. We tried one more spot in Farm Island then headed for Little Pine.

Bill got a bass in Little Pine on the jig, so I switched to the jig immediately. I missed 3 or 4 bites. Bill was missing bites and getting bit off. It was dead calm and minnows were skittering around above the milfoil, so I thought I would throw a few casts with the Bubble Walker. On the second cast, a 3lber took it but immediately jumped and threw the bait. Bill then had a good fish break off at the rod. He was looking for his line; The fish he lost jumped and immediately my lunker of the day (3lbs) struck the topwater. I got a bass that didn't keep on my very next cast. That all happened in the span of about 6 casts for me.

We went back into Farm Island and fished some docks. I tried out the Neko Rig like I said I was going to do. I got one that almost helped me breaking my Techna AV rod in the process. I got a couple of dinks as well. We went back to everywhere we fished in the morning and I had a few fish pick up a brown/green pumpkin craw tube. We ended the day watching Checkbook snatch a good one. Bill only got 5 keepers in the boat.

Results: My fish went 14/8 which put me in 4th Place and allowed me to be the Co-Angler Champion. The tournament was won by Tim Benson with 16/2 and Tim got "Lunker" with a 3/08 fish.

My Thoughts: A good day for me, some though luck kept it from being a good day for Bill as well. I may not switch a thing up for the next tournament at Rabbit Lake.
Conditions: 84-65℉, Sunny to start then partly cloudy to cloudy, 3-6mph SE
Water Temp: Low to mid 70's (just a guess)

The Day:
My boater Tim was confident we would crush them. The fish had other ideas.

We started outside a small cove along the South shoreline. Nothing there. I started topwater, then went to spinnerbait, then to a jerkbait, then back to a smaller topwater. As we got to a rocky shoal at the cove entrance Tim got his first keeper a small smallmouth. I'm not even sure what he was fishing with. We started approaching some docks. I think Tim caught a fish and needed to re-tie so I went to the front of the boat. I had a fish hit my Shower Blows when I wasn't paying attention and lost it half way to the boat. It was just a small keeper, no big deal right? A little way down the shoreline I got my big bass of the day on the Shower Blows. It was a smallmouth that went about a pound and 2/3rds. That was it for me for quite a while. We jumped to a couple of reefs. Tim had a good smallie break him off because he had his drag set too tight.

Tim was drop shotting and hardly getting a bite. That really played with me mentally because I just was not prepared for the day to go down like that. Finally, about 3 hours in we headed for some bullrushes. Tim got a good largemouth on his second cast and then quickly missed one. I missed hit on my frog in some small pads. I then got a small keeper off the back side of the rushes. Tim started culling and I got one that barely went over 12-inches. I missed a couple more bites in the rushes.

We went and tried some other spots. I got a couple shorts off of a small point. We went back to the start spot and Tim got his big bass, a 3lb smallmouth. It just wasn't happing there so we jumped a couple of offshore spots. Tim had a smallie get snatched by a muskie when he was bringing it in. He fought it for a couple of minutes before the muskie let go. Then the smallie got off Tim's line just like that. It wasn't a very big one and when it got off the muskie was in hot pursuit. We went back to the bullrushes to end the day. I missed one bite on a frog and I think I missed a couple that hit the craw tube but could have been rock bass. Who knows.

Three small fish, what a disappointment!

The Results:
My three fish weighed 3/12 and put me in 18th Place out of 20 anglers. Tim's fish weighed 12/04 and put him in 7th Place. He was only 9oz out of 3rd Place so breaking off that fish really hurt. The winner was non-boater Beau Bacon with 16/7. Lunker went to Chuck Fields with a 3/14.

My Thoughts: I didn't fish well. For some reason, I was checked out mentally for most of the day and just couldn't get comfortable with what I was throwing. I just think I was so unprepared for fishing to be so difficult. For at least the last two weeks of June catching bass for me became a difficult proposition. Not sure what it's gonna take for me to get out of this rut. I better find my mojo quick because the next tournament is less than two weeks out.

The Day:
Neither of us pre-fished so we went in basically blind hoping Alan's experience on the Chain would carry the day. We got off to a pretty good start running across Whitefish up into Loon Lake. My first bass of the day was a line burner caught on a 105 size Shower Blows. The only topwater bite I got all day, but wind and weeds forced that hand. I was surprised by the amount of weed growth in a number of areas we fished. At the end of the first hour my boater Alan was culling as he got into a spinnerbait bite in the wind. I managed to pull a 1.75lber off a dock on a 5" Yum Dinger while that was going on.

We moved up to the North shore out of the wind. I caught a 13-incher on the Dinger casting towards some pads. Alan spotted some beds and we drifted over a fish that was still there and Al caught it. It was Al's biggest of the day (3/10) and only smallmouth. I didn't catch any smallies. I caught my biggest one of the day (2.50) shortly after Al blind casting the Dinger. We continued fishing docks and pads until I got my limit and culled once which happened by 9:30AM when we left Loon on our way to Cross Lake. One of the fish I caught had a Senko and hook stuck in its gullet. I pulled the Senko out and the darn thing went belly up soon after.

Al decided to give Hidden Lake a quick look and he got three quick small upgrades. I missed my bites and Al started losing fish as well. After that, we hit some spots in Cross that yielded only little fish or nothing. So we then went to Clamshell. I think Al got one cull there. I lost a couple of bites that felt like good fish. We tried Bertha for a little bit getting nothing then headed to Hay to finish the day. I missed a good fish and got a small upgrade on the bubblegum Super Fluke fishing docks.

I thought I had done OK, but boy was I wrong.

Results:
My limit weighed 11/13 minus 2oz penalty so 11/11 was my official weight which put me in 17th Place out of 20 anglers. Alan was only 2 places better with 12/11. The winner was Chuck Fields setting a new all-time record bag for the Bass snatchers at 23lbs. Tuma tied the previous all-time record with 22-10 getting 2nd Place. The winner of the Co-Angler Challenge was Beau Bacon with 17/4 out of Tuma's boat.

My Thoughts: Not being able to pre-fish this one relegated us to the back of the pack. We were the only boat without at least a 13lb limit and you had to have 15/8 to crack the top 10. Neither I or Al anticipated that. On to Lake Alex.
I drove up to Snatcher Darren's Place and rode up with him. When we arrived at Leech it was blowing to beat the band out of the NNE when we arrived at 6:30AM. Not a good thing when we were launching out of Horseshoe Bay. The wind didn't die down and the tournament director switched us to the alternate lake at about ten to 8:00AM. So off we went to Birch Lake. My boater Alan had only fished the lake twice when the club fished here for the first tournament of the year in 2016. I fished the lake twice in 2016 and twice in 2011 when we fished there on Oct 1st.

The Day:
I think we blasted off by 8:40AM. Alan and I were boat number 1. Alan made the decision that we would run to the farthest west bay in the lake; It's a pad lined slop bay. Al got two quick small bass in the boat; One kept, one short. I missed a bite in the pads and had a pike hook up on the frog over open water where I saw a fish bust. We got into the open area in the bay. I hooked up with a bass near a pad patch that was out in the open on a black/red Terminator Frog. Immediately after I set the hook so did Al so we got a double. My bass was my biggest of the day (2/10) and Al's was just a keeper. I think Al got 2 more keepers in there. We then went across to an adjacent point and didn't get anything. So we headed a little farther East and tried some docks and wood on the north shoreline. I got a pike on a dock. We worked our way out on a point and I got a 2lber there on a green pumpkin Jackhammer. Other than a couple pike that was all we got. Next, we headed to the south end of the western basin and started working the weed flat. I put on a junebug Jackhammer and was quickly rewarded with a small keeper. We went up and worked the pads for a little bit and tried some reeds to the west not getting anything but a few pike. I then suggested we try the channel between the lake. I got a very small keeper out of the reeds on the southeast shoreline. We didn't get anything in the channel.

Next, we headed to where the river goes to Ten Mile Lake. I had a fish hit, hook up, hang me in some cabbage and get off. As I was reeling in I saw a 2lber following my Jackhammer so I killed it and the fish smashed it. I didn't get another bite until we were across the other side of the bay when a 14-incher hit my bone Sprinker Frog in some reeds. That was my last landed bass of the day. We went back to the bay we started in and Al got his biggest bass off the day in the pads. We worked around the southside pads of the little island. I had a couple of fish hit my Terminator Frog, but I didn't hook up. Probably just small bass like Al was catching. Then we tried the south side of the big island and all I could get was pike. And just like that, the day was over.

Results:
My fish weighed 10lbs 1oz which put me in 14th Place out of 18 anglers. Al had 2 more ounces than me and finished 13th. Keith Tuma won it 19/3 and had a 4/04 for the tournament "Lunker". Dwight Hammermeister, who was in Tuma's boat, came in 2nd and won the Co-Angler Challenge.

This finish makes me finishing in the club Super 6 highly unlikely, but I'm pretty much guaranteed I will reach my goal of finishing in the Top 10

My Thoughts:
My mental state wasn't optimal. I hadn't fished since Monday and I was 100% sure we were going to be fishing Leech Lake and had prepared myself for a tough bite there. My head just wasn't in the game like it needed to be. It didn't help that the fish never really clued us in. It didn't help that I didn't have rods and tackle along that would have diversified my fishing options. I think we probably should have tried a few more docks and definitely fished the eastern basin.

The Day: The first spot we stopped at was at a hump offshore somewhere where Dwight caught a good one while pre-fishing. We both started out throwing topwaters, but with there being a bit of a breeze I quickly put the popper I was throwing down in favor of a junebug color Evergreen Jackhammer. On about my 5th cast, it was fish on. I could tell it was a good fish, but it wasn't exactly fighting like a bass. Turns out it was a nice walleye, maybe 23-inches long. About 5 minutes later I got a pike. That was it for the starting spot. We tried briefly aways off of a point, not getting anything. Then we tried close to some reeds. No bites there. Then we headed out to where I had the big bass miss my topwater in pre-fish.

On my very first cast with the same smoke colored tube I used to catch some fish on my first ever tournament on Pelican Lake in 2009 I got the skunk out of the boat for myself with a 1.75lb bass. That was the only bite we got out there. Next, we went to the reeds on the South side of the island. Dwight had we thought was a 2lb smallmouth hit at his lure, but not get it. We then briefly fished off a point and on the north side of the island not getting anything. Next, we headed to the reeds on the south side of the entrance to Breezy Point Bay. I had a good fish take my Hack Attack Jig, but it came off as I tried to bring him through the reeds. Pretty quickly after that Dwight got the skunk out of the boat with a nice one. Dwight then added a small keeper after missing a couple of bites. I had a fish hit the Jig, but I swung and missed. I pitched right back to the spot and got a small keeper.

Next, we were gonna fish some other reeds, but another tournament boat was fishing out in front of them, so we fished a sunken island instead. Pretty sure this was the spot Dennis started us on back in 2009. It was calm, so I got out the good old bullfrog color Frenzy Popper I used to catch some fish on back in 2009. Sure enough, I had a fish hit it, but not hook up. I threw back to spot missing it by several yards. A bass that was just over a pound and a half was on it. Not sure if it was the same fish or not, but that was the only bite I got on the popper for the day. We next went and tried the reeds, but Dwight didn't like them and we quickly left for a cabbage area somewhere on the eastern side of the lake. There was a bit of a chop and I elected to throw a swimbait and was quickly rewarded with a small keeper. Next, we went back to the area where I got my first keeper and I got a 2lber there on the swimbait. We tried running South, then back to the starting spot. With about an hour left we went back to the reeds where we caught fish. They now had the wind blowing on them and we didn't get any bites. With about a half hour left we ran some docks. Dwight got a small keeper and a short. He also had a what was probably a small keeper come off. With 10 minutes left, we were getting over towards a large swimming area when we came to a dock that was right on the break. Dwight got a good keeper. I then briefly had a fish on. A few casts later I got a 2lber on a green pumpkin Jackhammer. I was pretty pumped. My last bite of the day was a nice pike that hit the junebug Jackhammer. And then time was up.

Results: My limit weighed 10lbs 4ozs and put me in 10th Place out of 21 anglers fishing.
Dennis Lothspeich won with 19/2. Chuck Steinbauer had "Lunker" with a 4/12 largemouth. Beau Bacon was the Co-Angler Challenge Winner with a 18/6 bag, which was 2nd Place for the tournament.

My thoughts: There were only 8 limits caught of which mine was the smallest. I am pretty darn proud that I managed to catch a limit. With two tournaments remaining I still have a shot at finishing in the Club Super 6, but it's an outside shot with 4 guys ahead of me right now for the 6th Spot. One more finish in the Top 8 should pretty much guarantee I reach my goal of finishing in the Top 10 for the year.
The Plan: Hope that the rice fish were going and that we wouldn't have too much company.

The Day: We blasted off right around 7:30AM and Keith beelined for the SW rice bay. He was shocked that we were the only boat to come into the bay. Several boats stopped in the cane and rice outside of the bay. Keith wondered if we had missed something. Seeing how nobody else came into the bay, we didn't head right to Breanne's Secret Spot. We started on a point with arrowhead pads just inside the bay. Keith had a good bass in the boat in less than 5 minutes of fishing out of the arrowheads. I had a fish strike at my new just out of the package Bluegrass Mad Maxx and not get it. Keith put the Power Poles down. The fish struck at me again but didn't get it. Several more casts with nothing and the Power Poles came up. I made a couple casts back and finally the fish committed and it was a solid 2lber (2.62lbs). We then didn't get a hit for about 20 minutes. We went in by a dock and Keith got a couple of dinks. I had a fish hit me in the rice, but not get it. On about the fourth try the fish nailed Maxx and stole it. Damn pike.

Ooops!

I don't think we got another bite for about half an hour. As we were in that lull I went to make a cast, but my line got caught in the hook keeper and I slammed Maxx straight down resulting in a catastrophic overrun. I decided to just switch Maxx onto my X-Heavy Frog Rod, not switch rods and reels. We came into an area that really held some big fish on Keith's first-day pre-fishing. The wind made presenting frogs difficult, but Keith got himself a good one. After he brought that fish in he decided to switch out reel handles on the Revo Rocket. We then got to an area where we had access to the bank. Keith got a couple of small bass and I had a couple of fish hit, but not get the frog. We then got into an area with a little more rice. I got a couple of dinks on a Yum Dinger, before getting a 1.47lber on Maxx. I also missed some hits on the Dinger. We came up to another big bank of rice and Keith got himself another quality fish. Unfortunately, that was the only one we could raise. I tried pitching a craw tube and got a couple of pike.

Right around noon, we got to Breanne's Spot. It wasn't but one or two casts and Keith is bringing in a good one. It jumped and I'm thinking 5lber. I got it in the net and we high fived. A couple minutes later and Keith make a good cull. I missed a couple of hits from fish that didn't get the frog. Keith got a couple that didn't help. I ended up getting a line burner, a few shorts, dropping a decent one that got me in the arrowheads and missing another one in the arrowheads in Breanne's Spot. I should of had my limit when we left. We headed back to the first big fish area. Keith got a couple that didn't help and I got a pike or two. We were working our way out of the bay when I got another line burner out of the rice on the Frog. With about 2 Hours left, we left the Rice Bay for some slop on the eastern side of the lake. Keith got a couple of dinks on docks.

For the last 45 minutes or so we worked docks in the public access bay. I got lucky and got my big fish (3/11) on a bubblegum Zoom Super Fluke off of a dock. I got a couple pike as well. And then time ran out.

Results: My 5 bass weighed 10lbs and put me in 6th Place. Keith blew everyone away with 19lb 11oz, putting him 5/11 over Nate Steinbauer in 2nd Place. Keith's big bass went 4/14. The club really struggled in this one and only 4 limits were brought in. I'm pretty sure

My Thoughts: I kind of blew it. I had the ideal partner for getting a top 3 finish and was on water that held big fish and I just couldn't make it happen. I didn't even get a limit for goodness sakes. If only it was a little warmer and the wind was half of what it was I'm pretty sure I would have had a pretty good sack. The tournament was a day late for that to happen as the weather was ideal on Saturday. Me deciding not to switch a working reel onto my favorite frog rod was a mistake.

Well, on to the Lake Edward.

Conditions: 47-64℉, Cloudy with fog for several hours, light and heavy rain after the first couple of hours, Windy ESE.

The Day:
The guys weren't in a big rush to launch the boats on this blustery foggy morning. I think we blasted off a minute or two after 7AM. Chuck took me to his starting spot where a couple of loons were milling around. Chuck got a couple of small keepers in the boat and a pike or two and a rock bass. I think I got a pike and missed a couple of bites. After fishing the area for around half an hour or so we moved on. Chuck got a little turned around in the fog for a second, but quickly got back on track.

We next went to a large weed flat where Tuma and Sarah were fishing. Chuck said they were on the juice. I got a couple of pike to start things off on the Pure Poison and Chuck landed a couple of small keepers and a pike or two. It was pretty clear to me at this point that the bass were not in a chasing mood, so I went to the craw tube. It wasn't that long and I had my first keeper in the boat, a solid 2.18lb fish. I quickly followed that up with a 1.71lb bass. Then it was a pike fest for a while and Chuck filled out his limit with little keepers. Tuma left. I noticed a fish swirl on the surface. I picked up a white Pure Poison/RaZor Shad and got a 1.14lb keeper on it. We got a few more pike and it started to rain.

We headed South to try some docks. Chuck got a rock bass. We headed back North. I got pike on three consecutive casts on the Pure Poison/Craw Fatty. I also got 1.21lb and .88lb squeaker along with a few more pike. We fished along Malkerson Island and got some more pike and a rock bass or two. We went back to the large weed flat where Bailey/Herman were now fishing. I think Chuck got a couple of bass that didn't help and I got a few pike and missed some bites. I also had a pike bite off my Texas Rig, so I downsized to 3/16oz sinker from 3/8th.

It started to rain harder just as we headed South and West. We were fishing an offshore point. Chuck and I both quickly got a small keeper. Chuck invited me up to the front deck to fish next to him. I had a fish pick up my Texas rig, but when I set the hook the fish had dropped it and the rig flew out of the water with the sinker nailing Chuck right in the eye. I saw the whole thing as it happened, quite scary. Chuck was in quite a bit of pain for a couple of minutes, but then he recovered fairly quickly after that. I was a gun shy for a little while after that and missed some bites due to a poor hook-set because of it.

We moved back into the central part of the lake and I got some pike on a Whopper Plopper and Chuck got a small bass off of a dock. We then went back up to the Northern part of the lake to try the starting spot getting nothing, Chuck asked me if I had any ideas and I did, which paid off in me getting 2.50lber, my biggest of the day during the heaviest downpour.

We went back to work the large weed flat again. I missed several fish as they bit on the upswing of my jigging motion. Also caught a few more pike.

We tried a spot over by Chuck's starting spot and I got a very minor cull along with a rock bass and a pike or two. We tried his starting spot one last time and then the day was done. It quit raining during the last hour or so.

The Results:
My Fish weighted 10lbs 1ozs, which put me in 14th Place out of 28 anglers. I jumped 2 places due to some anglers getting to the weigh-in a bit late. Chuck had 9/14 and finished right behind me in 15th. Jim Smith won with 13/10 and Dave Branum caught a 5/01 hawg for "Lunker".

Thoughts: Both Chuck and I just didn't put enough two-pound fish in the boat. One more 2lber would have jumped me into the top 10 and another one probably Top 6.

Before the Tournament:
When I was putting stuff in the car somehow my sunglasses fell off my head. I didn't realize it until I was half way to South Long. I had an extra pair in the car, so there was no need to go back. I found out when I got home that I had backed over the pair that fell off my head; My favorite pair of Fitovers.
I was kind of surprised that most boats were in the water when I arrived. Range Bassmasters Bill Bongs, who was my boater, boat was parked just to the left of the ramp (first boat in the picture). Bill Bongs is really good fisherman and even better guy.

The Day:
I think we were the 8th boat of 9 to launch. We headed to weedline just off of the reeds/cane in the North middle section of the lake. About 5 minutes into the day Bill put the first keeper in the boat on a spinnerbait. We both had several fish bump our lures and not hook up. I think we had just started to work our way back over the water we had just fished when I got my big bass of the day (3.17lb) on the junebug colored D & M Baits Piranha with blue/black Craw Fatty trailer. I think we both then caught a pike. Bill got himself another keeper just after I had a bass flash at the Piranha and not get it. I threw back to the area with a junebug Lake Fork Craw Tube and had 2.04lber get it. I think Bill got one more pike and we got out of there.

We headed up to the NE end of the lake. I'm pretty sure we were fishing the same spot Chuck and I fished on Tuesday where I caught one on the Piranha. I elected to start out throwing the craw tube and that was a good call because almost immediately it was fish on for me (2.05). I then lost a really good one on the way to the boat. I was just thinking in my head it could be a 4lber when it came off. I then got a 2.46lber, before Bill finally got in on the action. He had himself a little flurry and I got my limit fish (2.49lb). Bill noticed a guy fishing in a white Nitro, not one of tournament guys, down the way a hundred yards or so pull in several bass including a really nice one. I caught a couple more bass that didn't help me and I think Bill filled out his limit and maybe culled a time or two before we left. But I could be wrong on that. The wind came up before we left.

We next headed to the South side of the large reed island in the middle South of the lake. Bill got the first fish and I got one that didn't help on the Piranha. I got one that didn't help on the Craw Tube. Bill started whacking them on a jig. I couldn't get bit for the longest time. When I finally did it didn't help. We finally got out of that wind and Bill headed us to the SW end right to the area where Chuck and I got into them on Tuesday. Nothing was home. We moved in closer to the reeds and Bill caught one on a spinnerbait. I had us go in and try the pads. We spooked a pretty good size fish that didn't seem to be relating to anything. Maybe it was a fish that followed one of our baits into the open, who knows.

We then headed back towards our starting spot, but there were boats in the area so we just headed up to our second spot. We put down off to the South of the point. We had just started fishing when Snatcher Chuck showed up and started fishing right on the point. But nobody was home. We worked our way North along the weedline toward the spot where the Nitro was. Chuck left. I don't remember who got the first fish, but we found a pod of them. I culled twice with a 1.86lber then a 2.66lber on the Craw Tube. Bill got himself a really good cull or two as well. I think I caught a dink for my final fish of the day.
I heard that the Range Team was given to much weight and the Brainerd Lakes Bassmasters not enough. I don't know of that is the case or not. What I do know is that the Snatchers Won and Snatcher Keith Tuma caught a heck of a bag for that lake (20/10) and Big Bass (4/7). I came in 5th Place out of 18 anglers.

My Thoughts:

I reached my goal of being the top non-boater in the field with 15/12. That is in no small part due to the unselfish nature of Bill Bongs who seemed perfectly delighted I was catching good fish. Who knows if that one I lost was a big as I thought it might be, I had shot at big bass and placing in the Top 3. A great way to end my tournament season.

Conditions: 63-66℉, Cloudy to Mostly Cloudy some light rain, Light Wind SSW to WNW. I think the water level had come up some from the day we pre-fished.
Water Temp: Mid 60's

The Day: For the last part of my drive up it was thunder and rain. I loaded my stuff in the boat in the rain. I believe the rain quit by the time we blasted off. We headed North to the inlet. Within the first 15 minutes we both had a two plus pound keeper in the boat. I got mine throwing a 1oz Hack Attack Jig along the thick inner reed wall. The fish really smacked it. I think Alan then got a fish he culled out later in the sparser reeds. I had a fish hit my frog and not get it along a cattail wall. I kept casting back with a black blue Lake Fork Craw Tube and eventually a 1.63lb bass hit it. I then got a 1.38lb pitching the 1oz Hack Jig in the deeper reeds. We got over by the closest dock. I pitched the Hack Jig into the boat lift and caught my biggest bass of the day (2/13). I had to play it up and over the boat lift frame. It was barely hooked in it's upper lip.

We then moved to the West side of the upper lake to some reeds, pads, and rice. While I was putting together my Double Magnum Fluke Alan caught two quality fish on a spinnerbait. I was fishing again and Alan got at least two more fish before I got bit again. Alan had just caught a fish in a boat lane. I cast my Terminator Frog across the boat lane and a 2lber grabbed it. I then rolled two small fish on the hookset. I got a 1.78lb fish on the Frog. I missed a couple of bites. who knows if they would have helped. We started working our way South. I culled my two smallest with a 2.53 and a 2.31 on the frog. Alan caught his big bass (4/10) in the pads and reeds on a swimbait. I thought it was only a high 3lb fish. I caught a fish or two that didn't help me on the frog. We got over to where Chuck and Nate were fishing and got out of there.

I think we then went farther south to an area where we got some fish during pre-fish. Same kind of stuff: reeds, pads, and rice. I think Alan got maybe one that helped himself and I got one or two that didn't and missed a coupe of hits on the frog. I think the one's I missed were probably pike.

We went to a weedline spot off of some reeds. I missed a bite, before getting one that didn't help me on the Craw Tube. I then missed a couple of bites. The second one I got a great hookset on and it felt like a really good fish and then it just came off. The same thing then happened to Alan a couple of times.

We then went back and re-fished our second spot. I think Alan got one or two more culls and I got one that didn't help. There was now just a couple hours left. We went to make a move and the starting battery didn't have enough juice and Alan couldn't get it to jump. While Al was messing around with the batteries I missed a hit on the craw tube. We decided to throw traps over the large weed flat/point we were on. Alan had a big something get off and caught a small bass and I got a pike. We then headed off at full speed for Little Boy Resort.
It started to sprinkle a little bit. We fished a little bit along the way. Alan picked up a small smallie of a dock. I think that was the last fish landed for the day.
Thoughts: With the weights packed so tightly above me losing the last couple of hours because of the dead battery probably cost me a higher finish. After the way the last couple of years ended for me I can't complain too much though. At least I was culling fish and I got a front row seat to see how it was won.

To make the Top 10 in Angler of the Year I needed to finish in 2nd Place. I ended up in 13th Place for the year. I fished much better this year and got to fish with 4 boaters I'd never fished with before. All in all it was a good year for me even if I didn't reach any of my goals in terms of finishes. I had the smallmouth on at the Mississippi that would have gotten me "wood" had I landed it. Oh well, those are the breaks. On to next year.Basspastorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09111355231233505292noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10059688.post-35086087285359025892017-08-12T01:54:00.000-07:002017-08-14T01:55:06.400-07:00B.B.S. The Day:
Not sure exactly what time we blasted off at. We didn't run very far. I started off throwing the Whopper Plopper. After about 15 minutes my boater Mick got himself a decent bass on a craw tube. I immediately put down the Plopper because there hadn't been a hint of activity on the surface and picked up the Legend Xtreme with a blue/black Chigger Craw on it. About 5 minutes later I had my first bass in the boat, a 13.3 incher. Mick then got another decent one and I got a 13.5". Mick then caught 17 incher and a couple more good one's in pretty short order. I got a dink next to a dock as we worked our way back over where we had fished. My blue/black Chigger Craw was trashed so I put on a breen one. There started to be some surface activity so I started throwing the Plopper again. Mick caught his limit fish about an hour and 20 minutes in. I put the Plopper back down pretty quickly. I think Mick culled once and I got my big fish of the day, a 15.25"on the Chigger Craw. I was throwing both the Chigger Craw and a craw tube as well. I had several fish pick them up and drop it immediately. Also plenty of bites from sunfish. The area seemed to go dead, so we headed North to his big fish area.

There were lots of sunfish swimming around, so tried the LiveTarget Sunfish Wake bait. I saw some boils on the surface so I also tried a bluegill Shower Blows 105 for a while. Mick started catching some bass but they didn't help him, maybe he culled once or twice.

Mick gave me a red shad craw tube. I threw it for about 10 minutes without a hit and went to a black/red fleck Chigger Craw. Mick caught another bass and asked me why I wasn't throwing the craw tube. He had a good point. I switched from a 3/8 to 3/16 weight with the craw tube. While I was fishing the Chigger Craw and the craw tube once again I was having fish pick it up and drop it. I tried letting it sit or giggling it in place, but they wouldn't come back for it.

It was now a little after 11AM and we headed South. I don't know which bay we were in but Bill Bailey and Alan Steinbauer were both fishing really close to where we pulled in. Mick had a small keeper on before I even had my line in the water. Alan's boat left pretty quickly and we headed that way. Mick caught another bass that didn't help him. We went right into the thick coontail and Mick was showing me how he fishes for them in the Fall. He pulled in a small keeper on his first or second drop. He then caught another one pretty quickly. I think I then missed a hit and Mick caught another one. I missed a couple more bites, but finally hooked up on won just over 13 inches. Mick sat down and ate a sandwich. I think I missed one more hit, before me left for the next spot.

The next spot was reed island. I had a fish just hammer the craw tube after it landed, but when I set the hook there was nothing there. Might have been a pike. We fished the area for about half an hour and didn't get anything, so off we headed to what must be eastern most southern bay and fished off of a point. I got my last fish of the day (13.75) there and missed a couple of hits as well.

We went in and tried some docks. Didn't get anything. With about 40 minutes left we headed back to our starting spot and didn't get anything.

Results: My 5 fish weighed 7lbs 6ozs, which put me in 18th Place out of 22 anglers. Mick's fished weighed 14/1 and put him in 7th Place. Keith Tuma won his second in a row with 18/11. Chuck Steinbauer had a 4/5 big bass.

My Thoughts: Mick probably caught 4 fish to my one. He had me around fish all day and even gave me the color that was working. By the time I figured out I needed to grind with craw tube it was too late. My mental focus was good all day. Disappointing to not get a limit, but I had a good time.
6:45-2:50PM North Long Lake we fished all 3 Bays
Conditions: 60-83℉, Partly to Mostly Sunny, Wind All Day out of multiple directions

I came into this tournament without a care in the world. I was not prepared mentally for how difficult catching fish might prove. After the pre-fish I was sure we were gonna catch a limit a piece. Boy was I wrong. Normally, I am content to let my boater call all the shots for the day and am loathe to offer suggestions. I need to recognize instances where I need to be more assertive. This tournament was probably one of those instances, but I can't say with any confidence that the results would have been much different.

The Day:
I had thought to myself that starting where we caught multiple fish and then quickly left in 371 Bay should be our start spot. Checkbook suggested we start in the reeds where we got fish in Merrifield Bay. No problem. Fish for 30 minutes, if we don't get a bite get out of there and go to 371. That is pretty much the way it played out.

When we got to 371 Bay a boat was anchored maybe 50 yards to the NE of the juice. We were there maybe 15 minutes and Checkbook got bit off. I don't remember if I had gone to the front of the boat or not when I caught my only bass of the day on a Lake Fork Craw Tube. I threw out a marker buoy and went and got the fish weighed and put a cull tag in. By the time I was ready to fish again Checkbook was retied and back on the trolling motor. Over the next hour or so I missed a couple of hits and got a pike. I think Checkbook caught a pike. The boat that was anchored finally left. Checkbook wanted to leave as well. I thought we should fish toward where the boat was anchored, but didn't speak up.

We went to the reeds in 371 that I had a blow up in during pre-fish. Checkbook got his lone keeper there on a jig.

Next we headed to the main lake. We apparently just missed fishing a spot that had a bunch of small keepers on it. We didn't find the weeds. I suggested we try some docks. We went to either a resort or marina not sure which. Didn't get anything there. We fished some reeds nothing. Tried another spot close by. Nothing. We headed back to Merrifield Bay and fished the steep break on the North Shore narrows into the bay. A good looking spot, but we didn't get a hit other than me getting bit off once.

Next we tried some reeds on the South shoreline, nothing. We tried some docks. I think Checkbook got a rock bass. We tried some more reeds and some great looking shallow slop along the cattail shoreline. Not a sign of a fish. It was now about 2PM and both us were pretty frustrated. I think I pulled the plug on where we were fishing maybe a bit to quickly as we were approaching some good looking water with some cain and thicker reeds, but I really wanted to get back to that weedline spot on 371 and that is where we went and spent the rest of the day. We caught several pike there and both got bit off in the final hour. I also missed a few hits that might have been bass. I later learned that a lot of the bass bites felt like panfish and you really had to coax them into taking it. Or it could be that panfish were playing with a bait until a bass came to investigate. Whatever, the day was over and we didn't figure that part of the puzzle out.

Results: My fish weighed 1lb 10ozs, which put me in 23rd Place out of 24 anglers with Checkbook taking last. Keith Tuma won by more than a pound and a half with 17/09 and with 4/05 Lunker.

My Thoughts: I didn't really get spun out. It's just that everything we tried didn't work. If anything I was to casual believing we would eventually find and catch some bass. Looking back at my tournament results in July I haven't caught a limit in the month since 2012, ouch. This finish pretty much forces my hand. If I want any shot at making the Super 6 at the end of the year I'm going to have to fish Thunder Lake and miss my oldest brothers wedding ceremony. A disaster on this level next month at Gull will make that decision a moot point.

Next Tournament: Gull Lake August 12th
